Summer is a time for family activities - vacations, outings and fun together.  If you want to take some mini-vacations this summer, consider some of the following places not far from Long Beach.   Click on the links below and read more about the adventures available to you and your family.

Long Beach Transit offers a special program during the summer months called Museum Express.  It will take you to many of the museums and locales listed below (and more) on an air conditioned bus for only $6.00 for a round trip.  Advance reservations are required.  Click on this link for more information - Museum Express

Bowers Museum of Cultural Art    (Map)

The museum features indigenous fine art of the Americas, Pacific Rim and Africa.  It recently added an exhibit called Terra Cotta Warriors:  Guardians of China's First Emperor.  It also features a Kidseum, an 11,000 square foot museum designed for children and families.

The museum tells the story of Japanese Americans – their history, culture, customs and heritage.   It helps all people to explore the importance of cultural diversity.  Educational programs are available.

The Huntington is a research and educational center set amidst 150 acres of breathtaking gardens. Three art galleries and a library showcase magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures, rare books, manuscripts, and decorative arts. The botanical collection features over 14,000 different species of plants. Exhibits of over 110,000 works of art spanning from ancient times to the present.  Exhibits include painting, textiles, sculpture, lithographs, film, music etc.  The museum offers educational programs for kids and families – e.g., Summer Art Camp, Studio Art Classes for Kids and Teens, etc.  It also provides school tours and materials for teachers-  Education Program Trips to the Museum of Art are available on Long Beach Transit System's - Museum Express.

Works by 20th-century African-American artists and contemporary works of the African diaspora are the backbone of this museum's permanent collection. Its exhibits document the African-American experience from Emancipation and Reconstruction through the 20th century, especially as expressed by artists in California and elsewhere in the West. Special musical, as well as educational and cultural events are offered the first Sunday of every month.

Visitors can learn about Los Angeles as it was between 10,000 and 40,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when animals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the Los Angeles Basin.  Visitors can also observe archeologists at work in the Tar Pit.  School visit information, teacher resources and a listing of educational programs can be found on the web site. - Education

The Library contains galleries of photos and artifacts depicting the life of Ronald Regan, archives and research materials on his years as president of the United States.  The plane used by President and Mrs. Regan on their flights throughout the world, Air Force One, is displayed on the Library grounds.  Trips to the Regan Library are available on Long Beach Transit System's - Museum Express.

Live Steamers Railroad Museum        (Map)

Non-profit museum dedicated to educating people in railroad history and lore, and to further the avocation of live steam, gas-mechanical and electronic railroad technology.   Every Sunday from 11 Am to 3 PM volunteers operate 7½" gauge model trains for the public, free of charge.
