Joy with Others is a ministry for senior citizens in Our Lady of Refuge parish.  It began over 25 years ago as a way to bring seniors together for fellowship, social activities, prayer and service.  

Each month throughout the year Joy with Others sponsors a fabulous potluck luncheon in the parish cafeteria.  Between 45 and 70 seniors gather at noontime, each bringing a salad, main dish or dessert to share with others.  Following prayer, everyone enjoys a great meal and fellowship with old and new friends.  When the luncheon is over, tables are cleared and the group begins  playing Bingo.  At some luncheons there are guest speakers or special entertainment – dancers, singers, etc.  

Twice during the year, Joy with Others sponsors a weekend bus trip to Laughlin, Nevada – usually in October and again in late January.  This gives another opportunity for parish seniors to enjoy each other’s company and an enjoyable outing.   

Seniors extend their loving concern to others as well.   When they hear that  parishioners or friends in the community have experienced sickness or death in the family, Joy with Others volunteers send cards, notes and phone calls of support.  They also give donations to  worthy ministries and charities – such as the Justice and Social Action ministry in the parish (which helps the needy of Long Beach).   

All senior citizens are invited to join Joy with Others.  Follow notices in the Parish Bulletin to know when the luncheons are scheduled.  Simply come on the day of the luncheon,  bring a dish to share, meet some wonderful new friends and enjoy the company of old friends.
