. . . John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and then declared, "Look! There is the Lamb of God!" Then John's two disciples turned and followed Jesus. Jesus looked around and saw them following. "What do you want?" he asked them. They replied, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" "Come and see," he said. . . and they stayed there the rest of the day.. . (John 1: 35-39)

God calls each person to grow in faith, and He does so in unique and different ways. Some people are drawn by an insatiable curiosity to learn about the things of God. Other people are attracted by the deep faith of family or friends. Still others sense a void in their lives and are searching for meaning and fulfillment that only God can bring.

The Initiation Process at Our Lady of Refuge consists of several groups and steps to assist adult men and women who want to learn more about the meaning of life and God*s love for them.

Inquiry Group

Our Inquiry Group is for adults who are
bullet Wondering about the meaning of life, love and suffering
bulletSeeking more in life
bulletSearching for God
bulletTrying to find faith and community
bulletIn need of spiritual support and direction
bulletInterested in learning more about the Catholic faith

Facilitated by an Initiation Team member, the Inquiry Group meets weekly and is built around the questions and needs of the participants. In an informal setting, Inquirers are able to ask questions and become acquainted with the story of Jesus, the history of his Church, Catholic tradition and teachings. The Inquiry period lasts as long as each person needs it to last, from a few weeks to years, if necessary.

During their Inquiry, some may decide that the time is not right for them to consider membership in the Catholic Church, either because of their own life circumstances or because they feel some other faith tradition is better for them. When an Inquirer does feel called to fellowship in the Catholic Church, he/she becomes a participant in the parish Adult Initiation Process.

Initiation Process

Our adult Initiation gatherings are for those who are

bullet Unbaptized and preparing for the sacrament of baptism
                                or
Baptized in another Christian faith and preparing to join the Catholic Church
                                or
Baptized Catholic but needing background before receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist
bulletSerious about living in service of others
bulletSeeking the support and fellowship of a faith community
bulletReady to grow, make changes, and embrace a dedicated life

For persons to enter the Initiation Process, they must have come to faith in Jesus Christ and sincerely desire to become members of the Catholic Church. They then gather with the Catholic community on Sundays for the first part of the Mass. The initial conversion is deepened. This period, too, lasts as long as the person needs it to last, from a few months to several years, if necessary. For the unbaptized, this phase must normally last one full year.

In the weeks before Easter, those to be baptized intensify their preparation. On the eve of Easter, during the Vigil Mass, they are brought into full communion with the Catholic Church as they receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
