EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

When we
bless the cup at the Lord's Table, aren't we sharing in the benefits of
the blood of Christ? And when we break the loaf of bread, aren't we
sharing in the benefits of the body of Christ? (1 Corinthians 10:16)
There are two
aspects of Eucharistic Ministry at Our Lady of Refuge Parish. Ministers
of Holy Communion at Mass are lay people trained by the parish to assist
the presiding priest in distributing Holy Communion during Sunday and
weekday liturgies. Ministers of Communion for the Sick are lay people
sent forth by the parish to
bring the Word of God and the Eucharist to parishioners who are unable
to join us at Sunday Mass because they are ill, homebound, in nursing
homes, or in local care facilities.
The
necessary attributes for a fully initiated Catholic seeking to join this
ministry are a loving heart, a sense of responsibility, and the desire
to bring Christ to others through the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Our
parish training team conducts formation classes several times a year to
prepare new ministers for these important roles in bringing the Body and
Blood of Christ to fellow parishioners.
In
general, a Minister of Communion at Mass is scheduled to assist twice
each month at a Saturday evening or Sunday Mass. A Minister to the Sick
brings the Eucharist to an assigned parishioner every week, unless the
person is not well enough for them to visit.
Ministers of Communion at Weekend Masses
Ministers
of Communion have the privilege and responsibility of assisting at Mass
by giving the Body and Blood of Christ to communicants during parish
liturgies. In this way, they are Christ*s own hands, reaching out with
the Bread and the Cup, offering "the Body of Christ;" and
"the Blood of Christ."
Those
called to this ministry must be confirmed, practicing Catholics, with
reverence for the Eucharist, a sense of responsibility, and a sincere
desire to serve their fellow parishioners. Weekend liturgies at Our Lady
of Refuge take place on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 8:00,
9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Ministers of Holy Communion to the Sick
The
visiting Eucharistic minister assists the priests of our parish by
carrying Holy Communion to Catholics who are ill, homebound or in care
facilities. The Minister's visit provides the sick or homebound person
with an important link - perhaps the only link - with his/her Church and
fellow parishioners.
Because
of the great responsibility of carrying the Blessed Sacrament outside
the Church, Ministry to the Sick is performed only by confirmed,
practicing Catholics who understand the sacredness of their undertaking.
This awareness shows in their manner, their attitude toward those with
whom they come into contact, their personal preparation and their
devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
Ministry
to the Sick is a gift both to the patient, for whom the Ministers
represent the love of Christ and community, and to the Ministers
themselves, who have the opportunity to care for God*s beloved children.
It is helpful, though not necessary, for a prospective Minister to enjoy
meeting people and encountering different sorts of situations. Indeed,
nearly every time you go through a door, a surprise awaits you. It is a
gratifying, humbling, heartwarming, occasionally frightening, always
deeply spiritual experience.
