The Lord has given me a well-trained tongue, that I may speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. (Isaiah 50:4)

A Lector is a lay person who proclaims the Word of God for the assembly during Mass. This is not a ministry which can be performed by just anyone who is able to read out loud. Special gifts are required:

bullet

a love of scripture

bullet

a desire to probe the deeper meanings of each reading through prayer

bullet

dedication to preparation, reflection and study

bullet

openness to formation by God and others

bullet

the ability to read clearly and compellingly

At Our Lady of Refuge Parish, prospective Lectors take part in a training program conducted by our Formation Team. At the end of that process, newly certified Lectors begin as apprentices, assisted by experienced Lectors. All Lectors are required to attend occasional update meetings and a day-long annual parish retreat for liturgical ministers.

A Lector is scheduled to proclaim God*s Word at Mass approximately twice each month.
