The Respect Life ministry in Our Lady of Refuge Parish is an extension of the national program of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops and the Archdiocesan Office of Respect Life.

The objectives of the Respect Life ministry are to promote the dignity and holiness of human life from conception through natural death.    Some of the key moral issues flowing from a consistent ethic on the dignity of human life  are abortion, euthanasia,  capital punishment, human cloning, ethics of bio-research and the global trafficking of human beings for sexual and/or economic exploitation.

The Respect Life ministry in Our lady of Refuge Parish coordinates with the Regional Respect Life Council of the Archdiocese and works with representatives from other parishes in the Long Beach area.  The major functions of the ministry are to promote:

bullet

Prayer that human life will be honored and respected by individuals, families, groups and governments

bullet

Education and information about  the Church’s position on moral issues such as abortion, capital punishment and euthanasia.   It also promotes dissemination of  information about legislation which may enhance or threaten the promotion of the dignity of life.

bullet

Pastoral care for individuals and families impacted by abortion, capital punishment, etc. - for example Project Rachel in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

bullet

Advocacy on behalf of human life issues – e.g., contacting legislators regarding pending bills, peaceful demonstrations, etc.

Each year Respect Life groups across the United States set aside the first Sunday of October as Respect Life Sunday.  It is a time for special prayer and efforts to promote the dignity of human life.

The Respect Life group of Our Lady of Refuge participates in the annual Life Chain  on Respect Life Sunday, the first Sunday of each October.     From 2:30 – 4:00 PM,  participants stand at the corner of Lakewood and  Del Amo Boulevards (across from the Lakewood Mall in Lakewood).  The Life Chain is a peaceful, lawful, prayerful demonstration of love for all those affected by abortion.
