THE STORY OF OUR PARISH

THE STORY OF A VOCATION TO DEDICATED
CHURCH
SERVICE
Father Chris Cartwright, S.J.

My vocation to the priesthood was begun and
nurtured at Our Lady of Refuge. The
Sisters of St. Louis, our pastor, Father Vandenburgh, priests like
Father Hildare, Hahn, O’Callaghan, Kelly, Monsignor Daly, and so many
others were very
inspirational to me. They
were very generous with their lives and service to the parish.
They encouraged me to consider being a priest, and their obvious
happiness in their life and work really did make me think of it.
I also owe thanks to my parents and family
who also encouraged me to think of being a priest.
At OLR we had a wonderful atmosphere that promoted giving to the
life of the whole parish. My
parents were active in the parish guild, the school, choir and other
parish activities. I still
remember one Saturday spent painting classrooms in preparation of the
coming school year. We had parish sports, dances, socials, processions and events
that all my family attended (and usually worked at!). It was in that wonderful atmosphere that I learned how to
give myself to greater causes, the best being the service of God.
